Navigating the Future of GIS: Lessons Learned and Opportunities Ahead

Jamie Christensen, Founder Civic Vanguard

Date: Tuesday, march 25th, 2025 - 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM

Presenter Jamie Christensen

Jamie will discuss lessons learned during thirty years of career missteps, zigzags, and serendipity. He'll share his enthusiasm about where GIS is headed and ways our community can evolve to meet future challenges. Additionally, we will discuss the future of GIS careers and why you'll still be spending the rest of your life trying to explain what GIS actually is to your family and friends.

Jamie Christensen started his career as a GIS specialist for the USDA Forest Service, the Conservation Fund, and GeoDecisions. In 2000, he founded WorldView Solutions, a geospatial consulting and software firm. Gannett Fleming acquired WorldView Solutions in 2018, where he now focuses on AI as Innovation Director. In 2016, he co-founded the technology startup Outdoor Access, a company giving outdoor enthusiasts exclusive short-term access to private land for hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping while helping landowners earn additional income from their land. In 2023, Jamie founded Civic Vanguard, which is on a mission to serve those who serve our local communities. Civic Vanguard empowers local governments with its budget-friendly, collaborative, and GIS-centric software and services platform, CivQuest. Jamie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honors, from the College of Wooster, and a Masters in Environmental Management, with Honors, from Duke University.
