Having a Plan for your GIS (Even if you don’t stick to it)

Julie roebotham, practice manager, advantage program

Date: Thursday, February 27th, 2025 - 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM

Presenter Julie Roebotham

As the manager of the Advantage Program practice and long-time AP advisor, I have worked with many clients to understand where they are in their GIS journey and to help them figure out the steps to move forward. As with anything in life, it helps to have an understanding of where you want to go. Once you have this, you can break it down the path to get there into achievable steps. The AP at Esri Canada is a mechanism that helps clients do just this. I’d like to share about what the program is and how I came to be an advisor, what types of people we work with and what types of problems we run into and overcome. I want to talk about some supporting practices I think can be super helpful for any organization to adopt to help them move forward (understanding your organization, governance, and how change management can be your friend) and also how not to judge yourself too harshly when your best laid plan falls apart. Lastly, I want to talk about leveraging the power of the GIS community which is unique in the landscape of technology.

Julie Roebotham is the Advantage Program Practice Manager at Esri Canada and is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In her work helping customers implement GIS technology more effectively, her philosophy is to meet people where they are: to give GIS users and non-GIS users alike the skills and confidence to use their new tools, then celebrate their success. Her specialties include change management as well as governance program development and implementation.
