The Dr. Barry Wellar Young Professional of the Year Award honours an outstanding early-career geospatial professional who is making a meaningful impact on the industry. This award celebrates technical excellence, innovative thinking, community involvement, and leadership among professionals with 1 to 7 years of experience in the geospatial field.

Named in honour of Dr. Barry Wellar, a GIS pioneer, educator, and long-time supporter of BeSpatial Ontario and its Young Professionals Network, this award highlights the important contributions young professionals make to advancing GIS and building stronger communities.

• Eligibility: 1-7 years of experience in GIS
• Prize: $500 and a commemorative trophy
• Winner announcement: BeSpatial's annual event; BeInspired
• Nominations are submitted through an online form.

2026 Award Recipient

Congratulations to Jess Hobbins, recipient of the 2026 Dr. Barry Wellar Young Professional of the Year Award!

Jess is a young professional who has already made a remarkable impact in just five years in the geospatial field. Her work spans private consulting and municipal GIS, including meaningful contributions to remote Indigenous communities where she built trusted relationships and essential spatial datasets.

Jess also dedicated 2.5 years to BeSpatial Ontario as the Young Professional Network Manager, connecting students and emerging professionals with mentors, learning opportunities, and a supportive community.

In her role with Peterborough County, she recently supported the County as Acting Data and GIS Coordinator, leading system administration, application configuration, and staff training. She is a trusted colleague, and someone who strengthens geospatial capacity for both staff and the public through her leadership, technical skill, and commitment to service.
