The Best Challenge Awards (BCA) celebrate the innovation, impact, and excellence demonstrated by our geospatial and information community. Each year, we recognize outstanding individuals and organizations whose work is advancing GIS and shaping better decisions, services, and solutions across industries.

Submissions for 2026 are currently closed. Now is the time to review your favourite projects to prepare for the 2027 awards! Check out the four categories below to see where your project(s) fit best. Apply to one, or apply to more - we want to celebrate your hard work!

Best Public Sector GIS

Awarded for public sector organizations harnessing excellence in geospatial and information services through enhanced and effective solutions over the past year. The winning application demonstrates the best in creating meaningful, improved changes to business solutions and support for public sector entities, demonstrating usefulness in providing enhanced operational efficiency as well as information sharing, or decision-making processes within the public sphere.


Best Innovation in GIS

Presented to individuals or organizations who have pushed the envelope of technology to create new and innovative GIS solutions in their deliverables. This award celebrates new design and application of functionality, visualizations and initiative to a specific piece of work or project which has discovered new ground for use of Geospatial and Information Services in our industry.


Small Organization GIS

Acknowledges the outstanding achievements of organizations of up to 3 GIS staff members in their ability to adapt, manage and thrive in various challenges and constraints required in small entity organizations in GIS. This award is presented to the organization who has made a big impact in their work over the past year, showcasing their achievements and service excellence with limited staff and resources.


Open Source - Open Data GIS

Awarded to individuals or an organization who have best exemplified the promotion, growth and development of open-source technology throughout the year. The contributions these award winners make are highlighted in their efforts in fostering collaboration, transparency and accessibility to GIS tools and open data throughout the community.
